Chasing the Golden Hour
in the Dolomites

SEPTEMBER 12, 2025   |   5 MIN READ

The light in the Italian Alps possesses a quality unlike anywhere else on Earth. It is hard, unforgiving, and yet, when the sun dips below the jagged peaks, it wraps everything in a warm, cinematic amber.

Our ascent began at 3:00 AM. The objective was simple: reach the Tre Cime di Lavaredo before the first rays of dawn broke the horizon. As a visual storyteller, I know that light dictates emotion. The harsh midday sun conveys reality, but the twilight hours—those fleeting moments of deep blues and vibrant oranges—convey magic.

Embracing the Shadows

Too often, we try to illuminate everything. We raise the shadows in post-production, afraid of losing detail. But in cinematic photography, the shadows are just as important as the highlights. They are where the mystery lives.

By intentionally underexposing the foreground, I allowed the silhouette of the mountains to frame the explosive colors of the sky, creating a natural vignette that draws the eye directly to the emotional core of the scene.
